ALL God's Children

Reading through the lesson plan, I was encouraged to see there are educators out there who are addressing important topics such as queer affirming, trans affirming and collective value. I know that these can be hard topics to teach based on grade level and what administration allows. This lesson allowed for critical thinking and deep discussions. I also thought it was great that the educator included multimedia to aid student's understanding as well as extension activities.

The short video on Intersectionality was an interesting claymation way to explain a topic that is so important and hard for young students to grasp. I had never heard the term intersectionality until very recently, and apparently my spellcheck still hasn't! I was aware of the definition and what it meant for different people but, I had never put that term with it.
Watching the video I realized, I am Greta. Everyone in my family attended college so did all of my friends, I always knew I would go to college, I even went for free. The important difference between Greta and I is, I am not blind to it, nor do I ignore it. It is important to acknowledge.

Sometimes kids can learn best from each other, I thought it was cute watching them use their own terms and comparisons. "Intersectionality is a big puzzle from your toes to your head." :)
What I found not so cute were most of the comments  from people who clearly need to watch the intersectionality 101 video.

Intersectionality Kids Explain

Lastly, I wanted to touch on the video All God's People. I was raised Catholic and if anyone asks me my religion I say Catholic. However, I have stopped really going to church and I do not agree with some things stated in the bible particularly pertaining to homosexuality. I found myself being very educated when watching this because in high school I used to ask myself how someone who identifies as homosexual would want to be associated with the catholic church based on what they preach? This video opened my eyes to the fact that not all churches were apparently like mine. My church really focused on sin and repenting. I remember always getting nervous before confessions that God was going to judge me solely on my mistakes. This documentary gave me hope because it shows that there are churches out there that spread love and the most important message... WE are ALL God's children. I think only once more people begin to realize that important message, so much violence and hatred can cease.
I found a Queen song that is entitled All God's People. It spreads the message that so many in this world are missing and I love that Freddy Mercury used his fame as a platform for important social issues.

  1. Thanks for your post Danielle and for sharing that video--it's helpful to have some language to start with sometimes when explaining big complex ideas to young humans. Don't even start with YouTube comments. Don't read is the rule.

As for All God's People, how did the film make you feel about catholicism, your own church, or your present relationship with religion?
